In the event your learner permit was granted prior to April 4th 2011 then you are exempt from having to carry out the EDT training. If your permit has an issue date subsequent to April Fourth '11 then legally you must carry out the EDT before you can sit the test.

Here are some facts about the EDT

The EDT is a compulsory 12 Lesson syllabus that you must complete with a Registered ADI before you can apply for and sit the driving test. The syllabus was established to give you all the 'essential' skills you need to be a safe and competent driver.

  • You are issued a unique logbook that you keep throughout the entire EDT syllabus
  • Your instructor stamps, removes and uploads each EDT lesson certificate from the logbook to the RSA website after each lesson
  • The instructor leaves feedback and criticism on the instructor feedback page which the driving tester will see.
  • You have a self analysis page to use as a tool to reflect and absorb what you have learned.
  • You can change instructors at anytime but the EDT logbook must stay with you and be signed over from your previous instructor to the new one.
  • You should get 2-3 hours practice between each EDT lesson with your Sponsor
  • Once your instructor has uploaded all 12 EDT certificates to the RSA website you can apply for your driving test.
